Which Garmin

Postby zanne22 » Sun Aug 02, 2009 5:30 pm

Thinking about replacing my cycling computer with a Garmin Edge.

Looking to use it to track daily rides, speed, mileage, heart rate, would love the mapping component and to be able to look at pace rode between different points on a ride. Also would like to use it to download routes for century's and other rides to my macbook and of course the Garmin.

Any thoughts on which model and why?

Any preference between mono colored screen vs. colored screen (i.e. can you read/see it in the sunlight, battery usage)?

Also, how much space will it take up on the handlebar/stem area. I had to replace my stem with a shorter one to better fit the bike to me, so I'm short on space.

Thanks All.

I have the Garmin 305, I bought it specifically for the heart rate monitor (it's sealed and won't pick up other units like the Polar does). I have a MacBook Pro and I use the Ascent software package to download and save data. It does an excellent job on maps. This has been a plus for me. The 305 has a mono colored screen and I have no problem reading the info in direct sunlight. The battery will last approximately 6/7 hours.

The Garmin Forerunner 405. Does everything the 305 does. Plus it's just a watch. So not only can you take it on rides and get all the information you want, you can take it on runs, and any other workout. They also make a handlebar mount for it in case you rather have it on your bike than on your wrist. But I just wear mine on my wrist.

Thanks!

Couple of questions though:

Can you upload maps to the Forerunner 405, so as to be able to follow directions for a bike ride in an area your unfamiliar with?

Or does it just give you mapping capabilities after the fact to your computer?

My stem is so short (70 mm I think, more of a nub than a stem) I'm concerned the unit won't sit correctly as does BB's in his photos. As that's exactly where I would want it on my bike. I will definitely have to check out return policies prior to purchasing.

Nope. You get the map after the fact. Everything else you can see during your workout (speed, dist, pace, hrm, etc) but not a map.

The greatest riders thrive in the worst weather. Taking stormy training rides while others stay in bed or attacking when wind, rain, or snow make rivals think twice. Is the weather looking bad today? Get out and ride.

If you want the mapping features, I'd go with a 705. If you can do without mapping, get the 500. If you decide to get a powermeter down the road, you'll already have a ANT 2.4 compatible device.

That top cap mount looks pretty cool, BTW.

Thanks,

That's what I have decided to go with for my road bike. I like all the toys it comes with.

Now I just need to sell some stuff to pay for it.

I'm trying to decide which one to get...what is the pre-loaded map in the 705 like? Is it a Google Earth type map where you can choose satellite view or is it a generic mapquest type road map? Say I wanted to put together an AR course on a topo map, which is the best to get? JD knows more about these things than I do.

I would call it a generic, mapquest type map. No street view or anything like that. Honestly, I've used it(maps) twice since I got the thing in April. I'd take a 500 if they'd let me trade in the 705.

I have a Garmin support question. So I did 50 miles on my cross bike (on and off road) Sunday. I saved my route in history. I just went to upload my route and it asked to update firmware so I said yes. It uploaded firmware to my 310XT successfully however ALL my settings went back to default and my route in history was deleted. So pissed. Anyone else have this happen?

Don't worry, KK. I don't have one, so my response should not be indicative of the commonality of the ailment you described amongst other apparatus of the same manufacturer.

I have the Garmin Edge 500 and it works very well. I just gave one to my step-dad for Christmas last year because he is a huge cyclist and often goes on long trips without a GPS. He is obsessed with it now and its a great model for this type of navigation.

Anyone need a Garmin 705? I'd sell mine for $200.

I liked the form factor of 76 on the eTrex series of GPS receivers, which relies heavily on 5-Way, then closed.

adam- you really want to sell a 705 for 200?
it pedals the bike, or it gets the hose again.

BB and Andy, don't bother. I offered to buy this early in the year at the higher listed price. I even put my come back on hold waiting for it. Ruined my season. C1C is a tease!
